About My Development Life

Welcome to My Development Life

My name is Sarah and I work in international development/humanitarian aid. I read plenty of great blogs about work but rarely come across anything that delves into the personal aspects of a career in development/aid. The stereotype of an aid worker is a work-obsessed, adrenalin junkie who can’t hold down a relationship and is invariably running away from something. I don’t want to become that person!

So, with this blog I want to explore:

  • How to have a balanced life while working in international development
  • Preparing yourself for a field posting
  • Dealing with stress, health and fitness in field postings
  • Maintaining your relationships when you’re far away from your loved ones

I’ll ask the questions:

  • Is a career in international development for me? (is it the right career for you?)
  • Is it possible to have a career in international development and a balanced life?

And invite you:

  • To take a moment to discuss life in international development/humanitarian aid – the good, the bad, the strategies to stay human.
